From 1860.
JT Atkinson can trace its roots back to Cumbria when in 1860, James Atkinson left the family home near Penrith to establish a roofing business in Darlington. The business developed into a slate merchant and then into a builders merchant in the early 1900s.
Initially ‘J Atkinson & Son’ the business expanded from a slaters and tilers to supplying local contractors all their building and roofing materials and the company as we know it today was born.
To Now.
164 years later and now in the 7th generation of Atkinson leadership JT Atkinson now has 37 branches across Cumbria, Yorkshire and the North East.
Thanks to over 100 delivery vehicles and over 500 branch and support staff, JT Atkinson has continued to supply our local trades with everything from bricks to bathrooms.
From humble beginnings we continue to provide our customers competitive prices and excellent service from our team who go the extra mile to get you the materials you need when you need them.
From Horse & Cart.
It's hard to believe now but early Atkinson family members delivered all the building materials by horse and cart to site and everything was moved by hand. Thankfully we now have a fleet of HIAB vehicles which makes moving tonnes of materials a lot quicker and means we can often have your materials to site the same day.
To Click & Collect.
With over 20,000 products online you can now check stock in your local branches and click and collect what you need in the same day. Bulky items can be bought online then delivered to your doorstep or smaller items can be shipped nationwide from our warehouse.

A Family Business.
Generations of the Atkinson family continue to run the business today with the same strong values that company founder James Atkinson envisioned over a century ago. Company Chairman Edwin Atkinson, along with many members of the Atkinson family have worked across the business and the company has grown from three branches to nearly 40. As a family business we're able to think long-term and act as custodians ensuring that JT Atkinson & Sons will be around for another 160 years.
Since 2021, Managing Director Jamie Atkinson, a seventh generation Atkinson family member, is embarking on plans to modernise the merchanting industry whilst maintaining the values that our customers, suppliers, communities and colleagues have relied on since 1860.
Our Journey.
Since 1990 the business has expanded with the aquisition of Littlefairs, Hathaway Timber, Builders Supply Company and later Arch Building Supplies expanding our branch network across Cumbria, Yorkshire & the North East. Since then we’ve opened new branches in Scarborough, Otley, Baildon, Bingley, Stokesley, Leyburn, Helmsley, Whitehaven and Ambleside.
We've also expanded our product range to include plumbing & heating, bathroom showrooms, engineered timber, flood prevention and more. JT Atkinson is proud of its Northern roots and still lives by its original values of great products at great prices with an exceptional 5 star service and staff that feel more like a family.
