Q: What types of gas boilers do you stock?
A: We stock a full range of gas boilers to suit different heating setups and property sizes:
Combi boilers – Ideal for smaller homes, these provide instant hot water and heating without the need for a separate cylinder. Compact and efficient, they’re a popular choice for homes.
System boilers – A great option for homes with higher hot water demand, system boilers work with a separate hot water cylinder but don’t require a cold water tank, as they take their water directly from the mains.
Heat-only (regular) boilers – Best suited to traditional setups, they use both a hot water cylinder and cold water tank, typically found in larger or older properties.
We stock gas boilers from leading brands like Worcester, Baxi, Ideal, Main, and Intergas – all known for quality, performance, and ease of installation. Not sure which type you need? Our team can help you choose the right model for your home or project.
Q: What size gas boiler do I need for my home?
A: That depends on the size of your property and how much hot water you use. As a rough guide:
A 12–18kW boiler is suitable for flats or smaller homes
A 19–24kW boiler works well in mid-sized homes with one bathroom
A 25kW+ boiler is better for larger homes or properties with multiple bathrooms
We always recommend checking with the qualified heating engineer who will be fitting your boiler to get the right size and setup for your property.
Q: How does a gas boiler work?
A: A gas boiler burns natural gas or LPG to heat water for your home’s heating and hot water needs. It works by igniting the gas in a sealed combustion chamber in the boiler, which then transfers the heat to water via a heat exchanger. That hot water is then circulated to your radiators, taps, or hot water cylinder, depending on the boiler type you’re using.
Q: Do gas boilers need electricity to run?
A: Yes, although the heating mechanism is powered by gas, your boiler still needs electricity to work. Other key components of a gas boiler like the pump, thermostat and electronic controls, all require electricity.
Q: What’s the difference between a gas boiler and an electric boiler?
A: The main difference is the fuel source. A gas boiler uses natural gas or LPG, while an electric boiler only uses electricity to heat water. Gas boilers are generally cheaper to run due to lower fuel costs; however, electric boilers can be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. If your property doesn't have a mains gas supply, it can be far easier to fit an electric boiler, but oil boilers can also be used as an alternative if you aren’t on the mains.
Q: Is the UK phasing out gas boilers?
A: There are no plans to ban gas boilers. There had been plans to phase them out by 2035, but these plans have now been scrapped, so if you already have a gas boiler or are looking to get a new one, you still can. However, from 2025, new-build homes in England won’t be fitted with gas boilers and will instead require electric boilers or heat pumps. The government is encouraging low-carbon heating, but gas boilers still play a major role in UK heating systems currently.
Q: How long does a gas boiler last?
A: A well-maintained gas boiler can last 10–15 years, sometimes longer. Regular servicing, using the right parts, and keeping your system free from sludge or scale will help extend its lifespan.
Q: Do you stock LPG gas boilers?
A: Yes, we stock plenty of LPG ready gas boilers, ready to be installed and configured for LPG. We also stock LPG conversion kits as some boilers can be converted to run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). This makes them suitable for homes off the mains gas grid.
Q: How much does a gas boiler cost?
A: Prices vary depending on the brand, size and type of boiler. You can expect to pay upwards of £1000 for a new gas boiler; however, we do have some compact models available between £600 and £800. When costing how much a new boiler could be, you should also take into consideration additional parts needed and labour costs.
Q: Do you stock gas boiler parts and accessories?
A: We stock a range of compatible boiler flues and accessories to complete your installation. If you’re looking for specific spares or upgrade parts, contact your local JT Atkinson branch for availability.
Q: Can I get a gas boiler delivered?
A: Yes, we offer UK-wide delivery on all boilers and heating supplies. You can order online for direct-to-site delivery, or contact your local branch to arrange collection.
